Illegal dumping site is still a problem

"We discourage illegal dumping sites. It's a criminal offence if you are found on the wrong side of the law and you will face the music "

MBOMBELA – Unlawful dumping sites are getting out of control in some areas that are part of Mbombela Local Municipality (MLM).

This publication visited KaBokweni and Zwelisha where some residents complained that they couldn’t open their windows to get fresh air due to the unpleasant odour from these illegal sites.

“There are people who are dumping their rubbish in areas that are not designated for dumping. We are no longer coping with the unpleasant smell. Another worrying factor is if children play there they can contract diseases.

“We now monitor them closely and tell them not to go anywhere near the dumping sites,” said one of the concerned parents,
Ms Bonisiwe Silindza.

This publication has been informed that what aggravates the stench even more is that even dead animals are dumped at the sites.

The community appeals to the local municipality to rid its areas of these illegal dumping sites. Spokesperson for Mbombela, Mr Joseph Ngala said,

“We discourage illegal dumping sites. It’s a criminal offence if you are found on the wrong side of the law and you will face the music.

“There are areas that are under Amakhosi where it’s difficult for us as a municipality to issue fines, but in places like KaBokweni and KaNyamzane, we collect rubbish and also provide large dustbins.

“What we have noticed is that people are illegally dumping over the weekend because they, know our staff members are not on duty,” he concluded
