Victim was left paralysed by his assailants

The Mohlala family said they were happy about the sentence although it left their son with scars that will never heal.

MBOMBELA – The court case against four young men accused of beating a 24 – year old man and leaving him paraplegic seven years ago has finally come to conclusion.

The Nelspruit Magistrate Court sentenced Bongane Ngomane, Veli Methula and Vusi Sambo to 10 year in jail each, this comes after they were found guilty on the charges of attempted murder .

Charges were withdrawn against the fourth accused, Sifiso Ngoma due to lack of evidence against him.

Previously, the bed-ridden victim, Lucas Mohlala, lying in a bed specially prepared for him from the intermediary room, while the magistrate and everyone who attended the court hearing viewed his testimony from a screen, narrated how on November 8, 2008 the accused assaulted him with beer bottles, bricks and kicked him.

He told the court that they didn’t even listen to him when he pleaded for mercy and was left there unconscious. He was found by police and his parents with a swollen face and blood over his body.

Mohlala was admitted at Steve Biko hospital where he spent a month in the intensive care unit. He was then transferred to Themba hospital where he spent three more months.

The Mohlala family said they were happy about the sentence although it left their son with scars that will never heal. A mobile wheelchair and a monthly sponsor for adult pampers will help this family a great deal.
