MBOMBELA – The premier, Mr David Mabuza, is alive and well and is expected to return to work tomorrow.
Mabuza, through his spokesperson, Mr Zibonele Mncwango, said he forgave all those who spread rumours he had died and called on them to be supportive, caring and loving to other people and their families.
Mabuza’s return to office comes at a time when official opposition parties in the legislature are up in arms, calling for the appointment of a new premier. “The time has come for the ANC to show decisive leadership.
“Instead of burdening the province with an acting premier, they must stand up and support the opposition parties’ call for the appointment of a new premier.
“While the DA sympathises with the premier and wishes him a speedy recovery, the province cannot continue to function under the current level of uncertainty,” read part of the Democratic Alliance’s statement.
Before this, the Economic Freedom Fighters had raised a motion during the fifth legislature sitting, for the election of a new premier.
Mabuza has been on sick leave since September, and according to a statement by his office on Tuesday, if his doctors are fully satisfied with his condition, he is expected to be back in office tomorrow.
“Premier Mabuza appreciates messages of support and prayers from all the well-wishers who thought of him while he was resting at home as ordered by the doctors.
“He says it was indeed most unfortunate that he had not been well, however he felt there was a need to extend his recuperation period.
“He would like to thank all the citizens of Mpumalanga for their understanding during his absence,” read part of the statement.
Mabuza had not taken sufficient leave from work in the past five years, hence he was ordered to rest.
