TEKWANE SOUTH – The learners said walking alongside vehicles on the main road to get to school poses a danger to them, as some drivers do not bother to reduce their speed.
The road also has no traffic signs which signal to the motorists to reduce their speed.
This picket follows two weeks after two learners were allegedly knocked by speeding vehicles while walking to school.
“We are all concerned about the safety of our learners. We have tried several times to engage with the municipality to pave pathways away from the main road to make it easier for pupils to walk, even in groups, without their lives being endangered by traffic,” explains chairperson of the school governing body, Mr Kutu Dludlu.
Police officers arrived at the scene and after negotiating with the learners, they returned to class and learning continued as usual.
