Eskom extends power cuts in Thaba Chweu local municipality

Eskom says the extension of two hours of power interruptions is not the last resort, it will cut power completely if there is no agreement reached.

Three of the four municipalities in Mpumalanga have honoured their agreements to settle their Eskom debts. Thaba Chweu is the only municipality still experiencing power-supply interruptions.
According to Eskom’s national spokesperson, Khulu Phasiwe, the energy provider made this decision after the municipality did not honour its settlement agreement.

“We have decided to increase the duration of supply interruptions at TCLM by two hours per day. It is effective from October 25. Our engagements did not result in a payment agreement.”

Mkhondo, Govan Mbeki and Dipaleseng local municipalities are no longer experiencing power-supply interruptions.

“We suspended it in those municipalities after they had reached agreements to settle their debts.”
“The municipalities are failing the people, because community members are paying for the services but they don’t pay Eskom. Our client is TCLM, and we work directly with them, not the community,” said Phasiwe.
