Driver arrested after taxi overturns

A male driver was arrested after the minibus taxi he was driving lost control and overturned on the D2296 Road between KaNyamazane and Mbombela this morning.

The minibus taxi was commuting 13 learners from KaNyamazane to Nelspruit Primary, Valencia Combined and Klipspringer Primary schools.

The learners sustained injuries varying from minor to slight. The driver had been arrested for reckless and negligent driving. It is also alleged that he did not have a public driving permit (PDP).

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Pat Ngomane says that the arrest will serve as a warning to other public transport operators that the lives of the people they are transporting is more important than the money that they want to make.

He says that it is also the responsibility of parents to ensure that the transport their children are using is safe and drivers are fit to transport their children.
