Suspect remanded in custody for unlawful possession of gold bearing ore

A 65-year-old man was remanded in custody by the Barberton Magistrate Court on Tuesday.

The Hawks spokesperson in Mpumalanga, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi, said the suspect Fernando Zodwayo Nassi Mhlanga, was arrested by members of the Hawks Serious Organised Crime Unit for unlawful possession of gold-bearing materials at a farm Orega Barberton in the early hours of Tuesday.

“The intelligence-driven operation led to the arrest of Mhlanga who was found in his house in the farm processing Gold bearing materials. The suspect was then arrested and taken to court where he was remanded in custody and the case is postponed to next week Wednesday for formal bail application,” said Sekgotodi.
