Eight women shot in CBD raid

Members of Sita Nemphumelelo Hawkers Association, supported by hawkers from Barberton, raided various drug spots, including Soccer City, "Nigerian Spot" and other suspected spots in Anderson Street.

Eight women were rushed to Rob Ferreira Hospital after the police fired rubber bullets near the police station on Monday afternoon.

This was after hawkers in the CBD conducted a drug raid in their quest to root out drugs in the city. Members of Sita Nemphumelelo Hawkers Association, supported by hawkers from Barberton, raided various drug spots, including Soccer City, “Nigerian Spot” and other suspected spots in Anderson Street.

Before the incident, chairperson of the association in Mbombela, Ibrahim Hleza, said the raid should not be seen as a xenophobic attack on foreign nationals, but targeting drug users and dealers.
