Safety MEC tackles crime head-on

MEC Gabsile Shabalala warned communities in Daggakraal to work together with the SAPS and government In ridding itself of crime.

“If you don’t have a TV set and your unemployed child brings one along, report or take him or her to the police immediately. The problem crime escalates it’s because we unknowingly condone it in the name of loving or protecting your children.

“It’s common cause that criminals are well known to us because they live among us. Let’s do the honourable and expose them. Drug lords and nyaope sellers are well known to you as a community, but you choose to protect them.
“We cannot flush out drug lords if you conceal their identities and whereabouts to the SAPS and have them arrested. The future of youngsters is destroyed through drug addiction, so you better reply them and let the law take its course,” she said.

She was addressing an imbizo held at the local sports ground today in the company of Provincial Commissioner, Lt General Mondli Zuma. He explained that the SAPS duty is to arrest perpetrators of crime, compile evidence then hand them over to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) for prosecution.

“Don’t despair when you see a suspect out on bail and think one has been released. If a court grants bail, they are bound by strict conditions until they are convicted. Your co-operation is vital, then we can together reduce crime in society. We will also ensure that your community policing forums (CPF) are capacitated fully in order to be of adequate service to you,” assured Zuma.

He then requested station commanders from Daggakraal, Amersfort, Volksrust, Standerton and other surrounding towns to share their direct cellphone numbers with the community.
