Taxi driver allegedly shot and killed by traffic officer

A middleaged taxi driver was allegedly shot and killed by a local traffic officer on Tuesday evening.

According to the Limpopo SAPS spokesperson, Brig Motlafelo Mojapelo, the Tubatse SAPS have opened a case of murder on June 29 at about 19:00.

“It is alleged that two traffic officers were officially on duty at the Adams intersection in Burgersfort along the R37 when the deceased, driving a Toyota Quantum, allegedly emerged from the other side of the town heading in Polokwane’s direction.

“When he was pulled over by the officers, he allegedly did not stop, but instead knocked one of them, a female, over and proceeded driving. She sustained minor injuries,” said Mojapelo.

Mojapelo told Steelburger/ Lydenburg News that a car chase ensued into Mashamothane Village. The driver stopped and climbed out of his Quantum, allegedly wielding a wheel spanner. “He allegedly started to assault the female traffic officer on the forehead and body.

She fell down. The other traffic officer reportedly fired a warning shot in order to rescue his colleague. Unfortunately, this did not help. The taxi driver was then shot and thereafter taken to Dilokong Hospital for treatment.” This newspaper learned that the taxi driver died upon arrival at the hospital. The female traffic officer was treated and released on the same day.

Police investigations are under way.
