“We congratulate all the finalists and inductees for their hard work, resilience and dedication to the medium of radio in SA,” said Taryn Westoby, head of Arena Events, which will host the Radio Awards.

“Now, more than ever, radio has cemented itself as an accessible, trusted source of information and entertainment, as well as a platform for making people feel connected during incredibly trying times.”

The nominated radio stations include Rise FM, East Coast Radio, Jacaranda FM, Kaya FM, Radio 702, Lotus FM, Radio 2000, SAfm, Thobela FM, Umhlobo Wenene FM and Voice of Wits. Pretty D, who presents Evenings with Pretty D on weekdays, is nominated alongside fellow Rise FM presenters, the legendary Arthur “Shushubaby” Lukhele and Siphosami Ngcobo.

“On behalf of the entire Rise FM family, we want to say a huge congratulations to Pretty D, Siphosami Ngcobo and Shukuma Lukhele for being named as finalists in their respective categories for the Radio Awards 2021,” Rise FM management said.

Pretty D said her nominations were the result of the emancipation project programme that had aired between October and November. “I am truly humbled by such recognition. I would also like to thank all the women who were part of the show during that time. They came and spoke out their truths, and that is the reason the programme was so groundbreaking,” she said.

The programme hosted wellknown names such as Zanele Mbokazi, Norma Mngoma, Bp Sindisiwe Dashe and Xolelwa Nduneni Ngema. “The stories were intense, real and spoke to each and every woman in South Africa.

This nomination, alongside industry giants, and being the only lady nominee in that category (news and actuality) speaks volumes,” she said.

“Winning the award would be a great achievement for women in radio, especially in Mpumalanga. Women who have a voice in society are instrumental for an enlightened society.”
