Department of Education sets aside R28m for spring school and camps

"We wish to urge our learners to take advantage of this opportunity which will help a great deal to close the knowledge gap."

As a way to give grade 12 learners a final push before their exams begin, the Department of Education has set aside R28 251 896 for spring vacation classes and camps.

Some 22 241 grade 12 learners will benefit from these schools and camps scheduled for five days throughout the province, starting from Monday October 4 and ending on Friday.

The money set aside goes towards learners’ nutrition, the compensation of teachers involved in the programme, and transport for learners and teachers.

This programme will take place in 120 centres and will be targeting all the 194 schools that performed below 70% in the 2020 National Senior Certificate Examination and learners that are repeating matric.

The MEC for education, Bonakele Majuba, said these classes intend to offer the learners an opportunity to do well on the targeted 11 subjects. These subjects are mathematics, mathematical literacy, physical science, life sciences, economics, accounting, business studies, history, geography, agricultural science and English first additional language.

“Each learner must register for not more than three subjects. A centre manager must be a principal or a deputy principal of a school that has achieved 70% and above in the Grade 12 NSC results in the last three consecutive years (2018, 2019 and 2020).”

“We wish to urge our learners to take advantage of this opportunity which will help a great deal to close the knowledge gap, for content recovery and to prepare learners for the final examinations.

I also request parents and members of the community in general to encourage these learners and to create a favourable environment towards the success of these classes.”
