Survivor of GBV still fights for justice
Gender-based violence is still on the rise in the province.
KAMHLUSHWA – Nomfundo Mahlangu, a former grade 12 learner of Sidlamafa Secondary School, is still fighting for justice.
She was allegedly assaulted by her former boyfriend in November.
Mahlangu came home from evening lessons to prepare for her matric exams, when her ex-boyfriend allegedly attacked her with a panga, leaving her with inner ear and head injuries.

Some neighbors heard the commotion in her house and came to her aid. She was discovered in a pool of blood, unconscious. She had to spend 48 hours in a Rob Ferreira Hospital ward.
The police have been unable to apprehend the suspect for four months. Mahlangu’s GBV case has received much attention. Photos of her injuries have gone viral and many people have urged to her to seek for justice. She expressed her disappointment with the justice system in an interview with Corridor Gazette.
“I believe it is failing me. He has not been arrested yet, and the police took an eternity to take my statement. I feel heartbroken and disappointed. I’ve been beaten and suffered major injuries, including internal bleeding, ever since. Even now I can’t hear properly. I only want him to go to jail. I was unable to pass my examinations last year due to the injuries I got when he physically assaulted me.”

A provincial police spokesperson, Brig Selvy Mohlala, said, “We are still doing everything we can to apprehend the culprit, and we are still investigating the case, but the suspect has not yet been apprehended.”
