Community threatens to shut down school

Furious parents, learners and community members have threatened to close down Liguguletfu Primary School in the Nkomazi subregion.

KAMDLADLA – According to the community members, this school has been without a principal since June 2021, causing many learners to receive poor marks.

“A school without a principal is like a company without a manager. The learners are no longer performing properly. They are slacking off and disrespecting their teachers in the classroom,” said one of the community members at the forefront to revive the school, Sam Nyalunga.

“We want the vacancy filled as soon as possible. It has been too long, and the department has to hire a full-time principal. Some teachers are taking advantage of the situation, as they are no longer teaching or attending classes,” he continued.

Nyalunga argued that this school used to be a good, disciplined and dignified institution of teaching and learning and where learners had excelled in their studies.

One of the learners had this to say about the situation, “My parents have threatened to move me out of the school to another one. Many other learners have since been taken out by their parents. “I really like my school, and I hope that we’ll get a new principal soon, so that things can get back to normal.” Even with all these allegations, the provincial Department of Education has disagreed that the school is underperforming, according to its spokesperson, Gerald Sambo.

“The department had approved Phumzile Timbi’s relocation from Lubombo Secondary School to Liguguletfu as the new principal, soon after the school’s head retired in 2021.

“However, when the Nkomazi West Circuit manager arrived at the school to introduce Timbi as the new principal, some were unhappy with her appointment, causing the delay. The department is, however, continuing to engage with all the relevant stakeholders, and we remain optimistic that the situation will be resolved before April 5, the start of the second term,” explained Sambo.
