UPDATE: One fatality confirmed in earlier collision on N4

A truck driver burnt to death and five others were injured. It is still not yet clear how long the road will be closed.

The spokesperson for Emer-G-Med EMS, Kyle van Reenen, said the paramedics who attended the accident scene where two coal trucks had collided head-on at high speed, were met with absolute mayhem. As a result of the impact, one of the trucks caught fire, engulfing the occupant, a male driver believed to be approximately 40.

Van Reenen said the driver was burnt beyond recognition and declared dead on the scene. The driver of the second truck was treated for minor injuries only.

The occupants of the sedan vehicle that had crashed into the two trucks, suffered moderate injuries and were treated and stabilised on scene before being taken to a nearby hospital for further care.

Traffic in the area was severely affected, as the roadway was closed down to allow emergency personnel to work. Motorists are urged to be patient while the emergency personnel try to clear the road.
