The Mpumalanga Hawks have raised their concerns about the alarming rate of hijackings reported throughout the province.

“The Hawks is therefore reiterating about what is always said on hijacking prevention, and drivers are cautioned to take heed of the tips,” said the Hawks’ spokesperson, Captain Dineo Sekgotodi.

Before leaving your house or undertaking a journey, ensure that your vehicle is an adequate condition to avoid being stuck on the road. Know the direction and destination of where you are going.

Before driving off, ensure all windows and doors are properly locked. Have the contact numbers of the police stations, emergency services, family members, neighbours, colleagues or any other numbers that you can call at any stage of a predicament.

Do not pick up hitchhikers or strangers on the road.

While driving, check the rear-view mirror to ensure you are not being followed.

When you see a suspicious vehicle following you, alert the police with information about the vehicle: model, colour, registration number, and number of occupants, if possible, and the direction you are heading, or you can drive to the nearest police station.

Do not entertain the stranger who hoots or tries to stop you while driving, especially at night.

Let them follow you while driving straight to the police station. Do not park on the side road to refresh or relieve yourself – rather stop at a service station.

When you see a suspicious vehicle or person next to your vehicle in the parking area, do not approach. Report the matter to the police or security officers for help.
