Deadly N4 crash claims 7 lives near Machadodorp

Seven people died and one was seriously injured in a head-on collision on the N4 between Machadodorp and Belfast.

A horrific head-on collision between two sedans on the N4 toll road claimed seven lives at about 01:00 on December 27. The accident occurred between Machadodorp and Belfast.

One occupant remains seriously injured and is receiving treatment at eMakhazeni Hospital.

Moeti Mmusi, spokesperson for the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, confirmed that the cause of the accident is still under investigation.

“Preliminary indications point to dangerous overtaking and excessive speed as possible contributing factors,” he added.

The Mpumalanga MEC for community safety, Jackie Macie, reiterated the province’s call for motorists to remain extremely vigilant, especially at night when visibility is reduced. He also urged drivers to take regular breaks during long-distance travel.

Macie extended his heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
