Winners of the 2022 Satmas announced

The last Satmas to be hosted in Mbombela saw traditional artists receiving accolades for their excellent work.

The Mbombela Stadium came to life as the winners of the 2022 South African Traditional Music Achievement Awards (Satmas) were announced on Saturday.

This popular event that honours, recognises, appreciates and encourages the efforts and lifestyles of traditional musicians, poets and artists in South Africa, was attended by well-known artists and people from various provinces.

The Mpumalanga Department of Culture, Sport and Recreation received an appreciation certificate for hosting the awards for the past years, and KwaZulu-Natal was announced as new the host province for the next three years.

 

Four artists from Mpumalanga won. Ma’onas The Melodian won the best upcoming artist and group, Nomsa Mkhonza won the best traditional outfit award, Allentjie was the best Ndebele artist/group and Msa Lomshiyo won the best Siswati artist/group award.

Here are all the Satma 2022 winners: 

• Best Afro-soul song: “We Dance Again” – Daniel Brothers.
• Best African jazz artist and group: Mthobisi Mthalane.
• Best reggae artist and group: Burning Fire.
• Best praise singer artist and group: Venda Boy.
• Best indigenous poet artist and group: Ntombi Ya Mutsonga.

• Best upcoming artist and group: Ma’onas The Melodian.
• Best Mbhaqanga artist and group: Nombika Black Boyz.
• Best traditional a cappella artist/group: Nombika Black Boyz.
• Best traditional music community radio presenter: Lunga Mgamle, Zibonele FM.
• Best Department of Arts and Culture: North West.

• Best Department of Cultural Affairs chief director: Limpopo.
• Best traditional outfit: Nomsa Mkhonza.

• Best Venda artist/group: Vha Venda Cultural Group.

 

• Best Xitsonga artist/group: Nurse Matlala.
• Best Ndebele artist/group: Allentjie.
• Best Isixhosa artist/group: Sivuyile.
• Best Setswana artist/group: Dikwena Tsa Matlosana.
• Best Siswati artist/group: Msa Lomshiyo.
