MEC urges Mpumalanga motorists to exercise caution amid heavy rain and snow
Drivers are advised to reduce speed, switch on headlights and avoid flooded bridges as severe weather creates hazardous driving conditions.
Following ongoing rainfall and icy temperatures experienced in most parts of the country, including Mpumalanga, the MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Jackie Macie, has urged motorists to remain on high alert when driving in these conditions.
Wet and icy conditions can make tarred roads slippery and difficult to drive on. Visibility is also greatly affected, especially at night. Motorists are further advised to avoid driving through low-lying bridges and flooded areas.

The department urged drivers to avoid excessive speed and keep headlights switched on to increase visibility. “Drivers should also increase their following distance and, wherever possible, delay or postpone their journeys.”
Snowfall reported on major routes
Snowfall has been reported in the province on the N11 towards Volksrust and on the N3 towards KwaZulu-Natal.
Other hazards include misty conditions on some roads during the night and early morning.

The department added that, while no major crashes have been reported so far, traffic law enforcement and emergency personnel remain on high alert.
“Let us stay aware and adjust our driving in line with these adverse conditions to stay out of danger. We must monitor conditions and remain updated, especially when travelling,” concluded Macie.
