In aid of matriculants who are undecisive as to what to pursue as a career, the Mathews Phosa College has established a post-matric programme to commence next year.

The college’s managing director, Patcy Struwig, said the year-long programme will allow students to acquire skills to be employable and prepare some for tertiary level education.

“We will be offering skills development programmes or courses such as culinary arts, agriculture, engineering, welding and plumbing, and more. The learning curriculum is accredited by the Sector Education and Training Authority, which will afford the students certificates at the end of their training. We are excited that this plan was made possible by our close friend, Mathews Phosa.

“The Phosa family donated R250 000 to the development of this afterschool programme,” Struwig said.

During a recent luncheon celebrating the implementation of the programme, Phosa said he vowed to support the school from its establishment and will continue to do so, so that young lives in Mpumalanga are uplifted through education.

“I believe without hesitation that education is important, because it can restore one’s dignity and be a foundation to leadership. I could not let such an opportunity pass, being part of the first programme that will afford youngsters skills to venture into the various sectors in Mpumalanga,” Phosa said.

The college’s principal, Johannes Rammala, highlighted that the programme is targeted to those who have passed Grade 12, but do not want to go tertiary, do not know exactly what they want to study, or those who want to venture into a practical skilled working environment.

“This is a like a bridging course, prior tertiary, and it will be fruitful for those who do not want to be lawyers, teachers or doctors. The students will be required to make use of our hostel boarding facilities during the programme, which we believe will give them a tertiary experience too. I can guarantee that not only will they receive certification for their respective courses, but discipline and quality education with a holistic approach,” Rammala said.
