36 arrested so far in Mpumalanga’s Festive Season Road Safety Campaign

This campaign has yielded positive results so far. Multiple arrests have been made for excessive speeding, drunken driving and defective vehicles.

As part of implementing its Festive Season Road Safety Campaign, the Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison’s law enforcement officers have so far arrested 36 motorists for various offences, which include 27 suspects drinking and driving.

The MEC for community safety, security and liaison, Vusi Shongwe, said over 83 000 vehicles have been stopped and checked in various operations across the province since December 1.

Seven of the motorists caught were arrested for excessive speeding. Two-hundred and forty-four vehicles were discontinued due to defects, and 465 vehicles were impounded, which included some overloaded trucks and light delivery vehicles.

Over 12 000 motorists were also issued with summonses for various offences, including disregarding the rules of the road and defects on their vehicles.

All the arrestees are expected to appear in various courts soon.

Shongwe said although some deadly crashes have occurred, law enforcement officers should not despair, but continue to work harder. He urged motorists to always follow the rules of the road.
