Man fatally shot in attempted robbery in Bushbuckridge

A suspected robber was killed when a store owner returned fire during an attempted robbery.

An unknown man was fatally shot in an attempted robbery at a grocery store in Violet Bank in Bushbuckridge at about 15:15 on Wednesday February 28.

According to a Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Captain Magonseni Nkosi, two unknown men had entered a foreign-owned grocery store where they bought some cigarettes and sweets from the employee at the till.

“The store owner, who is also the employee’s brother, emerged from the back room while the two would-be robbers were still there. When he appeared, one of the alleged robbers drew a firearm and pointed it at him. The owner attempted to escape, but the armed suspect fired several shots at him. He drew his own licensed firearm and returned fire.”

Nkosi said the suspect was shot in the upper body. The other one fled the scene.

“The police and medical personnel attended the scene and the suspect was declared dead. A 9mm pistol with its serial number filed off was found next to the deceased. Cases of an attempted murder, attempted robbery, possession of an unlicensed firearm and an inquest were opened at the Bushbuckridge SAPS.”

Nkosi said both the deceased suspect and the shop owner’s firearms were seized and will undergo ballistic testing.
