With a talent and passion that grew from church, Sandile Ngwenyama (29), also known as ‘Sandile Thee MC’, hopes to take his MCing to bigger entertainment stages.

He is widely known in the KaBokweni area and surrounds as an MC who injects life into many events such as weddings, parties, local music festivals and corporate events.

“It is not an easy thing to stand in front of people or even a huge crowd and just speak, and not knowing how they would respond. It is frightening, but MCing requires confidence, knowing what kind of a crowd you are entertaining and being able to differentiate each event, especially as an all-rounder,” Ngwenyama said.

He said he started MCing in 2017 and often did it behind the scenes. “I would entertain people at social events. I gained the confidence to face the crowds and fell more in love with being an MC. I then strove to make a successful career out of it, which I am still working towards.”

Ngwenyama said the skill to entertain people came from church. “I used to be the MC at church services and I was groomed to do it because of my interest. It is not easy to pursue a career just being an MC. I have done quite a lot of unpaid gigs, which is not nice, but passion drove me to see beyond.

I think not being paid for your work, especially after a payment was agreed upon, is one of the major issues faced by entertainers and has caused some to lose interest in the craft. I believe that hard work and passion pay off eventually,” he said.
