Twenty-four learners of Enzani Primary School in Matsulu were rushed to Rob Ferreira Hospital in Mbombela after allegedly eating snacks bought from local spaza shops.

Some of them complained of stomach pains, while the others started vomiting.

“The cause is unclear at the moment, however, the affected learners reportedly bought some snacks from a local spaza shop,” said Gerald Sambo, the provincial Department of Education’s spokesperson.

Sambo said the school’s principal alerted the learners’ parents and immediately rushed them to hospital, where they are said to be in a stable condition. It is believed they have food poisoning.

A similar incident had happened at the Marhagi Secondary School in Verena on October 16.

Education MEC Cathy Dlamini said basic hygiene practices such as washing hands after using restrooms or before eating must be strictly adhered to at all times.

The department is monitoring the developments closely and updates will be provided.
