Mpumalanga football coach certified with Football 4 WASH

Cyril Morele aims to use football to teach children about hygiene, water and sanitation.

Sinani United Football Club’s head coach, Cyril Morele, was recently certified as a Football 4 Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (Football 4 WASH) coach in Mpumalanga.

Along with the others, he is set to make an impact in schools across Mbombela, bringing the programme to life and inspiring the next generation. With the support of FC Augsburg (FCA), they will use the power of sport to promote clean water, sanitation and a healthier future for all.

The FCA’s preseason training camp took place in White River in July. During their visit, the FCA engaged in some community work and served as ambassadors.

We incorporated the awareness and messages into the drill, and as we do it, they get to learn.

Morele told this publication that he had become curious about the programme during FC Augsburg’s visit. He said he spent time with them during the camp and was able to learn a lot. “I had an interest in how one can incorporate hygiene, water and sanitation. I was intrigued by the idea of educating kids about this through football. I knew that after the camp, there would be a training programme by TS Galaxy and Viva con Agua South Africa, and I made sure I was one of the participants.”

Morele said they teach the learners through a drill. “We incorporated the awareness and messages into the drill, and as we do it, they get to learn.”

He said they recently visited some local schools and have started educating learners on these issues.
