Reckless drivers face the full might of the law as authorities urge residents to help clamp down on dangerous street-racing hotspots.
A crash in Nkomazi that claimed the life of a woman has prompted the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison to intensify law enforcement against illegal drag racing.
Mpumalanga MEC for safety Jackie Macie has condemned the dangerous practice, warning that reckless drivers who endanger innocent lives must face the consequences of their actions.
he warning follows a crash that an eyewitness linked to illegal drag racing on Sunday, October 25, along the D1657 Road at Ritcher’s Hoek, between Malelane and KaMhlushwa.
The vehicle’s two occupants were transported to Shongwe Hospital, where one was treated for minor injuries and the other later died.
Authorities target illegal racing hotspots
Macie described illegal drag racing as a serious violation of traffic laws, warning that government would not tolerate the use of public roads for dangerous stunts that threaten the lives of motorists, pedestrians and spectators.
“We cannot allow our roads to be turned into arenas of lawlessness and dangerous stunts that cut short the lives of innocent people,” said Macie. “Illegal drag racing is a serious violation of traffic laws and an extreme display of recklessness.”
The MEC called on law enforcement agencies, including SAPS and traffic authorities, to clamp down on illegal racing activities, with particular attention to known hotspots across Mpumalanga. His message was clear: Public roads are meant for safe travel, not high-speed competitions that can end in tragedy.
Community urged to report racers
“We send our deepest condolences to the bereaved family, but we also declare that those responsible must face the full might of the law,” he said.
Macie also called on community members to play an active role in preventing further tragedies by reporting planned or ongoing illegal racing activities to the authorities.
Authorities are urging motorists to respect traffic laws and refrain from reckless behaviour, warning that the consequences of illegal racing can extend far beyond those behind the wheel.
Investigations into the Nkomazi crash are ongoing.
