Systems analysis seminar hosted in Mbombela
This seminar equipped these researchers with the tools to turn scientific insights into policy outcomes.
The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) hosted a seminar on ‘Systems Analysis: Options for Sustainable Futures’ on Friday, November 8.
IIASA is an international research institute based in Austria that advances systems analysis and applies its research methods to identify policy solutions to enhance the resilience of natural and socio-economic systems.

The renowned scientist and new deputy director general of IIASA, Prof Karen Lips, shared the urgency of multidisciplinary approaches to interconnected challenges, such as climate change and biodiversity loss.

The UMP’s deputy vice chancellor of research, innovation and internationalisation, Prof Aldo Stroebel, spoke on the importance of advancing quality research and impactful supervisory models. “Our mission is to equip researchers with the tools to turn scientific insights into policy outcomes. Engaging with global experts strengthens our science philosophy and helps address complex environmental and social challenges,” he said.

Dr Priscilla Mensah added that IIASA Africa’s focus for 2034 is designed to empower young researchers and address developmental needs.
