Young Pienaar crochetier and model aims for self-sustainability
Mbali Mthunywa wants to have her own crotcheted fashion line while participating in pageants to advocate for body positivity.
A talented young crochetier and fashion model, Mbali Mthunywa (22), is yarning her way into the fashion industry.
This stunner from KaMsogwaba in Pienaar became a crocheted clothing designer as way to nurture the crocheting skills she had learnt from her mother. She has unique designs and hopes to showcase her skills and flair on bigger stages and runways.
“I learnt crocheting at quite a young age, all thanks to my mum, who also took the time to teach me. I took it more serious from 2021. I love fashion and I love crocheting, so combining both these passions just makes sense. This entrepreneurial venture has opened some great opportunities for me, such as dressing the Miss Ehlanzeni 2023 finalists for the swimwear category of the competition. I also earned a spot in the prestigious Phakama Mpumalanga Festival 2024 to exhibit some of my work and made my billboard debut from the event as well,” she said.

Mthunywa ventured into modelling recently and hopes to participate in pageants to advocate for body positivity. “I champion for self-acceptance, self-love and inclusivity. I want to use various platforms to inspire and empower others, especially women with darker skin tones. There are still stereotypes against women who have darker complexions not being pretty enough or worthy of anything good. I want encourage younger girls to love and be confident with any skin tone, because we are all beautiful,” she said.

One of her goals is to take her passion for fashion to the next level, such as officially launching her crocheting business, Mbali’s Crochet. “I also want to further my studies and pursue a career in agriculture. I love growing and creating things. I already have my own backyard garden at home where I spend my extra time tending to it when I am not creating designs,” she said.
