SPONSORED | Miss Mpumalanga 2024 and MER urge citizens to be responsible
The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator and Bajabulise Thela recently warned against excessiveness during the festive season.

Greetings, I’m Bajabulise Thela, Miss Mpumalanga 2024 and the ambassador for the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER).
The festive season is a time of joy, filled with gatherings, parties and celebrations. However, it’s also a time when people may over-indulge in alcohol and gambling, leading to harmful consequences for individuals and families.
Research tells us that even when people intend to drink responsibly, it can be difficult as getting drunk is often an accepted norm. There is often social pressure to drink and the setting makes it easy to consume large amounts. Similarly, gambling can spiral out of control when people seek quick financial fixes or entertainment during the holidays.
The MER encourages responsible behaviour by adopting these tips:
Responsible consumption:
• For children under 18, not drinking alcohol is safest
• Pregnant or breastfeeding women should avoid alcohol entirely
• Never drink and drive
• Liquor traders may not sell alcohol to anyone under 18.
Responsible gambling:
• Set strict time and budget limits
• Take regular breaks, and never chase losses.
• Avoid giving large cash gifts to known gamblers
• Limit alcohol consumption while gambling, and
• Plan alternative fun activities.
Let’s make this festive season memorable by celebrating responsibly. Together, we can create a safer, healthier community for everyone.
This message is brought to you by the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator.
