No one hurt in minor fire at Rob Ferreira Hospital in Mbombela

The Mpumalanga Department of Health released a statement saying there was a fire in the hospital caused by a patient’s cigarette butt, although it was extinguished.

The Mpumalanga Department of Health (DoH) says one of the pipes in Rob Ferreira Hospital caught fire on Tuesday, January 21.

According to the DoH’s spokesperson, Dumisani Malamule, it is alleged that one of the patients was smoking and threw a cigarette butt and it landed in the wrong place and it started a small fire.

Malamule said the fire department was called in and the fire was extinguished.

“No person or patients were injured as they were evacuated in time. However, the smoke went through several wards including the day and paediatric wards.”

Malamule said there was not much damage caused except for the burnt pipe.

“The department wants make a plea to all smoking patients, staff and visitors, that they must smoke in designated areas and ensure that they throw their cigarette butts in the bin. The department will repair the damage caused by the fire with immediate effect,” said Malamule.
