Pienaar radio DJ conquers the airwaves
While enjoying being on radio, Queen Dee is pursuing more ventures behind the mic, such as MCing and voice artistry.
A local radio show host known as Queen Dee, real name Dimakatso Masuku, has the voice to be a queen of the airwaves.
Growing up in Gobhoza, Masuku said she always mimicked radio presenters using a stick as her microphone, and always wished to be the entertaining voice behind the mic.
“While upskilling myself with everything there is to know about radio, I finally got my first radio gig in 2019. I joined KRadio, a community radio station in KaNyamazane, hosting the Friend Zone Show from 12:00 until 15:00 on weekdays. This show boosted my confidence, proving that I can achieve whatever I dream of, as long as I work hard towards it,” she said.

Stepping into the more professional side of radio, Masuku found more hidden talents behind the mic. “I got a lot of compliments about my voice and people always suggested that I also become a voice-over artist. Now I am doing it. I am also an MC.”
Masuku said 2024 was a year that made her believe she is making an impact on the entertainment industry. She was nominated as Radio Personality of the Year at the Sunrise Excellence Awards and featured as a voice actress on a Ligwalagwala FM play, Misenti Yakho.
“The play aired in October last year and it was an amazing experience to have my voice heard on one of South Africa’s biggest radio stations. It was a learning curve as I grew in the industry. Meeting all those people I have always looked up to, and sharing a stage with them, was a feeling I really enjoyed.”

Besides being behind the mic, she enjoys gathering with the community and teaching others about social ills such as gender-based violence. “As a country, we need to take domestic violence seriously and report it to the police, before we regret not taking action in time,” she said.
She said her goals are to have her own show on Ligwalagwala FM and to be an inspiration to youngsters growing up in rural areas such Gobhoza.
