KaMaqhekeza soccer player joins Banyana Banyana training camp
Lerato Maiacane, a passionate soccer player, said joining the national team's camp is a dream come true as it could boost her career.
Super Strikers Ladies Football Club winger and striker Lerato Mavis Maiacane (19) has joined the selection of players chosen for the South African senior women’s national team (Banyana Banyana) camp.
The Banyana Banyanas and other potential players, like Maiacane, assembled for a camp in the upcoming FIFA window running from February 17 to 26.
Maiacane is excited about this and said she hopes everything goes well as it could potentially benefit her football career. “This is a dream come true. I really appreciate this opportunity that will make my career in soccer. I have been putting in extra training sessions and participating in some friendly games to strengthen my technique and skills, since we received the invitation,” she said.
She is a humble young woman who fell in love with soccer in 2020 in the streets of KaMaqhekeza, also known as Naas. “I picked up some football skills in the streets and I just fell in love with the sport. I ended up joining a club to play professionally. I always told my parents that I will go far with this sport, and here I am now. I am so happy I don’t even know how to explain my joy. I hope I make it through to the national team, and to make my club, parents and myself proud,” Maiacane said.

The Super Strikers’ head coach, Siboniso Simelane, said everyone in the club is excited for Maiacane. “We have all seen her energy and drive for success, from the grassroots to national levels. She needs everyone’s assistance to be able to reach for the stars. We really hope she makes it through. It is it not the first time she will be joining the national team for a camp. She participated in the U17 camp in 2022 and was cut in the last week,” Simelane said.
Maiacane played in the Sasol Women’s League, which Super Strikers won in 2024. The club represented Mpumalanga in the nationals in Cape Town in October last year when Maiacane was scouted by the national team.
