Teenage boys die following Numbi initiation school fire

Three teenage initiates died at a hospital outside White River as a result of wounds sustained in a fire.

Three teenage initiates died after a fire broke out at an initiation school in Numbi. The boys, who hail from the Numbi Gate area, reportedly sustained fatal burn wounds.

Mpumalanga police said the fire broke out inside the school on Wednesday, August 5. Attempts to extinguish it proved unsuccessful.

All three victims were rushed to Themba Hospital outside White River, where they later succumbed to their injuries.

The spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Co-operative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Freddy Ngobe, said the department was concerned about the incident and extended its profound condolences to the families.

“While investigations continue, efforts to ensure adherence to health and safety measures are being observed,” Ngobe said.

Mpumalanga police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo confirmed that SAPS has opened inquest dockets for further investigation.
