Families connect with ancestors on Good Friday

Grave cleaning during Easter is a tradition practised by many families in Africa.

Many families gather in cemeteries on Good Friday to clean their loved ones’ graves.

They bring along flowers, their ancestors’ favourite drinks and candles to light to honour the dead.

This tradition has helped families to strengthen their bond and provide an opportunity to share memories of those who have passed awaway.

According to Muntu Mahagane, who visited the graves of her loved ones at Kabokweni Cemetery, the youth should be encouraged to participate in this tradition.

“The disconnect between the youth and their culture is the main contributor to the challenges we face today. The graves are where you connect with ancestors; without a connection there would be no life. The reason we have societal problems today is because our youth is focused on irrelevant celebrations that do not serve them with wisdom,” said Mahagane.
