Pienaar coach empowers young girls through soccer

Matukane's love of football bloomed at a young age and she has played for several local teams.

As a passionate football lover, coach and pastor, Elsie Matukane (40), has made a notable impact on the local football landscape, particularly in developing Pienaar’s young talent.

Matukane was born in Mkhuhlu, where her love for football became clear at an early age. After playing for various local teams, including Home Fighters Ladies, Take Free United Ladies, Katlehong Ladies and Flamingo Ladies United, her talent earned her the opportunity to represent her community in national tournaments, where she competed against notable figures such as Portia Modise and Sibongile Khumalo.

She aims to provide the young girls she coaches with opportunities to showcase their talents. “I want them to be encouraged to pursue their dreams. I believe in promoting football among girls and challenging the notion that it is a male-dominated sport,” Matukane said.

She added that being a female coach has its challenges, but courage and confidence drive her to succeed.
