Mahushu artist celebrates African heritage with new single

The newly released 'Badikoma' song celebrates African culture in style.

A local kwaito and amapiano artist has released a new single, “Badikoma”, which seeks to celebrate the significance of communal festivities and traditions in South Africa.

Lwazi Chauke (24), stage name Tboy Lwazi, released the song in close collaboration with a local producer,
SK Lapho, on May 16.

He said the song captures the essence of African heritage, focusing on the culturally important practices surrounding the journey to the mountains, the initiation school also known as ingoma. “This tradition is cherished by many cultures and this song honours the celebration that follows when individuals return from the mountain with moments filled with joy, connection and community spirit.”

He said the new single features a line-up of talented local artists, including Abo Khahlamba, Phici and Roman Power, each bringing their flair to the collaborative masterpiece.

Chauke said he started making music young and was inspired by his uncle.

“I was taught how to write songs by my uncle, Dumisani Mabilane. Later, I realised how much I love music and decided to do research on which steps to take next,” he said. “Some of my music career highlights include winning Best Hip-Hop Album at the Mpumalanga Hip-Hop Music Awards last year. The album is called Evolve. My music has also received airplay on Ligwalagwala FM.”

Chauke said his dream is to be famous and have his own record label, through which he will help talented upcoming artists in the province.

“Pushing through good and bad times has kept me going and working towards my dream. Promoting my work regardless of how many followers I have, research, asking for guidance and registering my work has brought me this far,” he said.
