Remember to keep children safe: Mpumalanga schools to close for second term soon

School holidays are a time for children to take a break and spend quality time with family and friends.

The second term of the school calendar concludes on June 27, and keeping the children safe during this period is vital.

The Department of Government Communications and Information System issued a statement on Thursday, June 19, to remind parents that even when spending some quality time there are still some things to remember.

During school holidays and as learners do not have school work; they use this time to explore their freedom and independence.

Parents and caregivers should remember that some young people may use this period to explore their independence and freedom. The third term will commence on July 22.

Here are some things to remember to your children safe:
• Monitor your child’s daily and online activities
• For the safety and well-being of your children, limit their time on the internet and monitor the apps and websites they access
• Being aware of your child’s online activity helps prevent exposure to child predators and cyberbullying
• Tell the child to always inform you if they are approached by a stranger.
• When visiting public places, agree on a clear meeting point in case you get separated
• If you suspect your child is missing, act immediately. Go to your nearest police station to open a case.
