The City of Mbombela’s executive mayor, Cllr Sibongile Makushe-Mazibuko, outlined the municipality’s service delivery successes and future plans during her State of the City Address on Thursday, June 26.

Makushe-Mazibuko addressed several key focus areas, starting with water provision. She said plans are in place to extend access to more residents, including the construction of a regional dam. The additional water capacity is expected to enhance investment prospects by ensuring the availability of bulk services.

With regard to sanitation, the mayor said approximately 15 000 households will be connected to the sewer network by the end of her term. Current projects include the Rocky Drift Wastewater Treatment Works, the Barberton Wastewater Treatment Works, and the Umjindi Northern Outfall Sewer.

“We remain steadfast in our commitment to managing waste responsibly and in full compliance with environmental regulations,” said Makushe-Mazibuko. She added that the municipality would continue maintaining 78 recreational parks, covering a combined area of 103 hectares.

Several pedestrian bridges have been constructed to enable residents to move safely between villages in rural areas managed by the city. Road paving, upgrades, and ongoing pothole repairs are also under way.

The mayor said that the CoM has made notable progress in addressing the backlog in the provision of electricity.

According to Stats SA’s 2022 data, 96% of households have access to electricity, with only 4% still awaiting connection. Since 2021, a total of 5 296 households have been provided with electricity and formally handed over.

To support the city’s vision of a safer urban environment, the CoM will implement a 24/7 CCTV monitoring system.
