Sam Nzima Foundation celebrates Youth Day with action-packed soccer and netball tournament

Ligcabho FC and Mashabane Club were crowned the champions of the Sam Nzima Foundation Youth Day tournament.

The Sam Nzima Foundation hosted a top-four soccer and netball tournament to commemorate Youth Day at the Tshwane University of Technology’s Mbombela Campus Sports Ground on June 15 and 16.

Two soccer semi-final matches were played on June 15, with the winners advancing to the finals the following day. In the first game of the tournament, Ligcabho FC secured a commanding 4-1 win over Talis Towers FC.

Ligcabho launched an aggressive attack from the outset, limiting their opponents’ ability to settle into the game. Luvo Jalile came close to scoring in the 15th minute, but his shot struck the goalpost.

Two minutes later, Ligcabho FC capitalised on another opportunity and netted the opening goal, taking a 1-0 lead. Despite Talis Towers’ attempts to equalise with long passes and sustained pressure, the first half ended 1-0 in favour of Ligcabho.

Ligcabho FC’s Tsepang Lusufi extended the lead early in the second half, scoring in the 49th minute. Katlego Kgoete added a third in the 61st minute.

Talis Towers’ substitute, Amahle Hlatshwayo, scored a consolation goal in the 79th minute to bring the score to 3-1. But Lusufi sealed the win with his second goal in the 85th minute, ending the match 4-1.

In the second semi-final, Leanwood FC and Mebala FC drew 1-1, forcing a penalty shoot-out. Mebala FC triumphed 4-2 on penalties to reach the final.

In a thrilling final, Ligcabho FC once again dominated, defeating Mebala FC 4-1 to win the tournament. The netball matches were equally competitive.

Leanwood Club beat Carnaby 25-14 in the opening match, while Mashabane Club overcame Carnaby 27-19. In the final, Mashabane Club defeated Leanwood Club 23-18 to take the title.
