Nkomazi Local Municipality workers take to the streets to demand unpaid wages

The march affected services, including waste collection and water meter reading.

Employees of the Nkomazi Local Municipality (NLM) marched to the municipal offices in Malalane demanding payments of overtime work and travelling claims on Wednesday, July 2.

The large group of employees were led by Cosatu and the South African Municipal Worker’s Union (Samwu) to highlight some of the challenges faced by the workers. A memorandum was handed over.

The workers demand immediate action from municipal officials to address their grievances and restore financial stability, transparency and accountability of the municipality’s financial status.

The employees have been on strike since June 23. Last year a similar occurrence was experienced by workers who were not paid their overtime and travel claims.
