Innibos patrons urged to behave on the roads

Reckless driving will not be tolerated during and after the Innibos arts festival.

The annual Innibos festival brings many people to Mbombela and also boosts the economy of the city. Motorists are warned to drive with caution on the roads and make sure that they adhere to the rules of the road.

The spokesperson for the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security, and Liaison, Moeti Mmusi, said the annual Innibos event enhances social cohesion among the revellers.

“Many festivalgoers will be able to create lifetime memories by attending the event. However, Innibos could be negatively affected by the loss of lives and injury due to mostly avoidable road crashes. Motorists who will be travelling to the festival are encouraged to obey the rules. They are also advised to travel during the day whenever possible due to the shortness of daylight in winter,” he said.

Mmusi also said motorists are urged to adjust their driving in line with varying conditions on the road, including weather conditions and roadworks.

Motorists are advised to observe the following tips:

• Plan your route in such a way that you can rest sufficiently along the way.

• Adjust your driving according to prevailing conditions, including weather and road works.

• Ensure that your vehicle is roadworthy.

• Ensure your vehicle is insured and that you have roadside assistance in the event of emergencies.

• Ensure that you are always reachable on the phone when travelling.

• Do not pick up hitchhikers, as you may be vulnerable to carjacking.

• Travel during the day whenever possible.

• Reduce speed when driving in wet weather and on unfamiliar roads.

• Do not text while driving.

• Maintain a prudent following distance.

• Switch on headlights during adverse weather conditions.

Law enforcement will be on standby to ensure that people obey the rules of the road, and do not drink and drive for their safety and that of other motorists.
“I must indicate that traffic officers will deal with those who will not respect the rules of the road, during and after the festival. Law breakers will be dealt with,” concluded Mmusi.
