Boschfontein man to spend 20 years in jail for raping his niece

The NPA’s provincial spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, said the 27-year-old accused was convicted of three counts of rape.

A 27-year-old man was sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment for raping his 10-year-old niece. The sentence was handed down by the Boschfontein Regional Court on Friday, July 11.

According to the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) provincial spokesperson, Monica Nyuswa, the accused was found guilty of three counts of rape, which took place between 2019 and 2020. Nyuswa said the accused exploited the absence of the victim’s grandparents to commit the heinous acts, causing trauma to the young girl.

The victim reported the abuse to her grandmother, who turned to the authorities for help and medical attention.

“The state prosecutor, Joshua Sibeko, presented compelling evidence, including the victim’s testimony and medical reports, which led to the conviction of the accused. The court also ordered the accused’s inclusion on the national register for sex offenders and declared him unfit to possess a firearm,” she said.

The Mpumalanga director of public prosecutions, Sonja Ntuli, applauded the diligent work of Sibeko and Court Preparation Officer Lizzy Mhlongo, stating that the conviction reinforces the NPA’s commitment to pursuing gender-based violence perpetrators without fear or favour. The NPA’s partnership with Thuthuzela Care Centres (TCCs) provided the victim with crucial support, highlighting the importance of a victim-centred approach in addressing abuse.

The NPA urged families and communities to remain vigilant, report abuse, and seek survivor support through TCCs, while fostering safe environments where children are protected. “The NPA calls on South Africans to unite against gender-based violence, upholding the constitutional rights of children to dignity and safety,” said Nyuswa.
