Alexandria centenarian honoured by ANC

The centenarian advises young women to respect their bodies and eat healthy food.

The community of Alexandria came together on Saturday, August 23 to celebrate a remarkable milestone – the 100th birthday of Mascondisi Mkhonto, known as Ngwa Sbensis’s.

The joyous occasion, organised by the ANC and local community members, was a vibrant tribute held at her home.

Born on August 16, 1925, Mkhonto’s birthday celebration was postponed to avoid conflict with an Ingoma ceremony in the area.

The delay, however, did not diminish the spirit of the event, which was attended by family, friends and local leaders.

When asked about the secret to her longevity, Mkhonto offered a simple yet profound philosophy. She credited her long life to a healthy diet, self-respect and a peaceful life.

“I grew up eating earthy green leaves, and even today I am still eating them because they are good for my life. I always respected my body and made sure that I didn’t feed it with unhealthy food.”

Mkhonto also stressed the importance of respecting others, both old and young, and having a fear of God.

“Your days will be long on this earth,” she advised. At 100 years old, she proudly noted that she still has her eyesight, doesn’t take any chronic medication, and can do things on her own.
Overwhelmed with gratitude, Mkhonto thanked the ANC and her family for the celebration. She said she never imagined she would celebrate her birthday in such a grand style and was especially touched that community members came together to celebrate with her.

Mkhonto’s life is a testament to her dedication to the fight for freedom and equality in South Africa. Her daughter, Nikiwe, shared that the family was incredibly grateful for the celebration, especially since it was organised by the ANC, the party her mother has been affiliated with for years.

Mkhonto was a dedicated activist and was among the brave women who marched to the Union Buildings on August 9, 1956, to oppose the apartheid-era pass laws.

Her daughter noted the importance of celebrating Mkhonto during Women’s Month, stating: “The celebration coincided with Women’s Month, which is particularly meaningful to us, since she was part of the struggle to liberate women in South Africa.”

Her grandchild, Johan Manzine, expressed his deep gratitude, saying: “We never thought that she would make it to 100 years. She is the only one in the family who has reached this age, and she is still looking strong and healthy.”

Ward councillor Sabelo Mkhabela highlighted the importance of the event, explaining that it was organised to honour Mkhonto’s loyalty to the ANC. He added that even if she hadn’t been affiliated with the party, a member of the community reaching 100 years would have been reason enough for a celebration.

“We are honouring her bravery. Even at her old age, she is still a party member and a beacon of hope in the community. We want to show that we care about the elderly in our community.”
He emphasised that celebrating her birthday during Women’s Month and acknowledging her role in the 1956 march was a bonus as she is now enjoying the benefits of what she fought for.
