Mpumalanga police arrest over 1 200 suspects in four days
The operation was conducted in all four district municipalities - on roads, at taverns and in other hotspot areas.
The Mpumalanga police have arrested 1 254 suspects for various crimes during the Operation Shanela from Thursday to Sunday, September 25 to 28.
Police spokesperson Sergeant Thulisile Magagula said this is an ongoing effort to combat crime and enhance public safety.
“A total of 7 800 actions, including seven roadblocks, were executed, resulting in 1 254 arrests,” said Magagula.
The suspects were arrested for crimes including contravention of the Immigration Act, illegal possession of firearms, illicit liquor trading, public drinking, driving under the influence, drug possession, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and rape.

Magagula added that five firearms, 10 vehicles, cash and drugs were also seized.
The acting provincial police commissioner, Major General Dr Zeph Mkhwanazi, commended the officers for their dedication. “We remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of our communities. The success of Operation Shanela demonstrates the impact of co-ordinated efforts, and we appreciate the invaluable support from our partner departments,” he said.
The police will continue to intensify crime combating operations across the province to uphold law and order.
