Spring intervention classes in Mpumalanga target underperforming schools

The Mpumalanga Department of Education held spring classes from October 6 to 10 for nearly 20 000 learners from underperforming schools.

The Department of Education (DoE) is conducting spring classes for all 159 schools that scored below 80% in the 2024 National Senior Certificate Examination. The classes began on Monday, October 6 and ended on Friday, October 10. The programme is taking place in 99 day centres and six residential centres, targeting a total of 19 688 learners.

Mpumalanga DoE spokesperson, Gerald Sambo, said to ensure maximum impact, the department has selected some of the best-performing teachers to assist learners with difficult curriculum content and provide guidance on effective study techniques.

“Learners will also write pre- and post-tests to help the department measure the impact of the intervention. The programme will cover 11 high enrolment subjects to ensure that learners receive focused support in the most critical areas. In addition, school nutrition will be provided at all centres, and scholar transport will be arranged where necessary,” Sambo said.

He said the monitoring of the programme will be conducted by both the districts and head office officials to guarantee quality delivery.

“This intervention forms part of the Learner Support Improvement Plan, aimed at strengthening learner performance across the province. In 2024, Mpumalanga achieved an impressive 84.99% pass rate, and through these interventions, the department is determined to raise the bar even higher in 2025.”

The MEC for education, Lindi Masina, has called on learners to seize this opportunity to realise their full potential. She further appealed to parents to provide the requisite support and create an environment that is favourable for their children’s success.

“We call on everyone in the province to play their part in supporting the Class of 2025. Let us create conditions that place Mpumalanga firmly on a path of success. To our learners: every hour of preparation counts. Stay focused, remain disciplined, and do not allow anything to distract you from your goals. You carry our hopes, and we believe in your ability to excel,” said Masina.
Sambo said the final exams will commence on October 23.
