University of Mpumalanga stands against gender-based violence

UMP faculty and students gathered to raise awareness and learn more about the scourge of GBV.

To show its commitment to combating gender-based violence and femicide (GBVF), the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) observed a moment of silence on Friday, November 21. Staff and students stood together, honouring victims and emphasising the urgent need for action against GBVF.

Dr Nokubonga Mazibuko, chairperson of the UMP Gender Forum and senior lecturer in gender studies, highlighted the importance of recognising GBVF as a national disaster and called for improved reporting channels and support within the university.

“We stand in solidarity with women, gender non-conforming individuals, and men who are victims of violence. Our aim is to raise awareness in our community and challenge everyone to do better,” Mazibuko said.
