Bushbuckridge based journalist finds his voice on community radio

Freddy Mpangane his now hosting a show called Sunday-Sunset, from 13:00 to 17:00 every Sunday at Radio Bushbuckridge and his enjoying every moment of it.

The South African radio landscape is constantly evolving, and every so often, a fresh voice emerges that captures the pulse of the community.

Freddy Mpangane, a native of Marongwane Village in Bushbuckridge, is quickly becoming one of those voices.

Currently a mainstay at Bushbuckridge Radio, Mpangane is proving that a mixture of accidental discovery and raw talent is a powerful recipe for success.

Unlike many who spend their childhoods dreaming of the light-up ‘On Air’ sign, Mpangane’s path to the studio was unexpected.

Before finding his home behind the microphone, he sharpened his storytelling skills as a freelance journalist for a publication in Elukwatini.

His transition from print to broadcast began when he was offered an internship at the community station, Bushbuckridge Radio – a move that changed the path of his career forever.

“I always listened to radio stations, but the thought of being behind the mic never crossed my mind. When I was given the chance to host a show, I initially thought I wouldn’t make it. However, along the way, I fell in love with the microphone and enjoyed every moment of it. Since then, I have never looked back,” he said.

Mpangane hosts his own programme, Sunday-Sunset, from 13:00 to 17:00 every Sunday, providing listeners with the perfect soundtrack and conversation to wrap up their weekend.

The show also includes updates on tourism and sports. His talents extend beyond entertainment; he also works with the news department on current affairs, conducting field research and gathering news during the week.

“For me, Bushbuckridge Radio is just the beginning. I have a clear vision for the future, and I am focusing on establishing myself in the industry. With my roots firmly planted in Marongwane and my voice reaching across the airwaves, I have no doubt I will make my mark,” he said.

Mpangane expressed his gratitude to the station for giving him the chance to discover his hidden potential, vowing to continue nurturing his talent as his career ascends.
