Mpumalanga launches real estate learnership for 200 youth in Steve Tshwete
A strategic partnership between government and property authorities aims to drive sector transformation by equipping young people with NQF Level 4 qualifications.
The Mpumalanga provincial government launched the Real Estate Learnership Programme in Steve Tshwete Local Municipality on September 2.
Through this programme, 200 young people from Ehlanzeni, Gert Sibande and Nkangala districts were placed on a path towards a property management qualification and a foothold in one of South Africa’s most influential economic sectors.

The initiative is a landmark partnership between the Office of the Premier, the Services Seta and the Property Practitioners Regulatory Authority.
Learnership offers 18-month practical training
The programme is a 12- to 18-month skills development initiative packed with property management lessons to obtain an NQF Level 4 qualification and practical experience. The qualification will usher them into the property sector.
On completion, graduates will be placed with reputable, established property management companies for practical experience to gain valuable knowledge about opportunities within the property management industry.
Government drives property sector transformation
The initiative was led by the minister of human settlements, Thembi Simelane, together with the MEC for public works, roads and transport, Thulasizwe Thomo, and the executive mayor of Steve Tshwete Local Municipality, Cllr Mhlonishwa Masilela.
Thomo, on behalf of Premier Mandla Ndlovu, emphasised the strategic significance of the programme in his remarks.
“Today’s launch is far more than the commencement of another learnership programme; it is a strategic intervention that seeks to reposition young people of this province as active participants in one of the country’s most significant economic sectors,” he said.

“Your selection represents not only confidence in your potential, but also government’s confidence that you possess the determination to become ambassadors of professionalism, integrity and excellence within the property industry,” he added.
Delivering the keynote address, Simelane linked the programme to the broader transformation agenda of the property sector. “We are trying to create an African face in the property industry, to ensure the entire property sector is representative of the transformation agenda our country seeks,” she said.
