Public urged to be responsible when gambling and consuming alcohol this Easter
As Easter celebrations begin, the Mpumalanga Economic Regulator urges the public to practice moderation and make responsible choices.
The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER) has issued a notice on responsible behaviours during the Easter holidays, emphasising on alcohol consumption, gambling and excessive indulgence that continues to have devastating effects on individuals, families and community members across the province.
MER CEO Vusi Mtsweni said what begins as recreational behaviour can quickly escalate, resulting in serious consequences such as including addiction, financial hardship, domestic conflict, road accidents and long-term health complications.

“The Easter holidays should be a time of rest, reflection and safe celebration. As people travel and come together with loved ones, we encourage everyone to make responsible choices. Alcohol consumption and gambling should never come at the expense of one’s financial stability, health or family wellbeing,” he said.
Mtsweni emphasised that gambling should be strictly limited to affordable entertainment, and not viewed as a means to generate income or recover financial losses.
Similarly, alcohol consumption should always be done in moderation and in a manner that does not endanger oneself or others, particularly on the roads during this high-traffic period.
