Lydenburg author writes about post-matric life

A young voice from Lydenburg is challenging the silence around life after matric, through his powerful book Life After Matric: Thabiso’s True Story.

A young author is reshaping the narrative on what happens after high school. Sibusiso Mahlangu (24) is an author and content creator. He uses his voice to highlight a reality many young people experience but rarely speak about – the uncertain transition from matric into adulthood.

Mahlangu’s Life After Matric: Thabiso’s true story is a powerful and relatable book, inspired by real-life experiences. It dives into the often-overlooked period after matric, when expectations meet reality.
Growing up, like many South African learners, Mahlangu believed that doing well in school would automatically lead to opportunities and a stable future.

While that belief creates hope, his experience and the experiences of those around him revealed a more complicated truth. Many young people face university rejections, unexpected gap years, and the overwhelming uncertainty of not knowing what comes next.

He said what struck him most was the silence surrounding these challenges. The emotional and mental impact of this transition phase is rarely discussed, leaving many to struggle alone. This realisation became the driving force behind his writing.

He said, through this book, he aims to break that silence and open conversations about mental health, support systems and the pressures placed on young people after leaving school.
He aims to speak directly to students and learners in matric and those in gap years, reminding them that life is not a race. According to him, matric is just one milestone in a much longer journey.

“Delays in opportunities do not define a person’s future, and taking longer to find one’s path does not mean failure,” he said.
“My work does not stop with this one book. I have built what I believe to be an impressive collection of nine titles, each focused on motivation, personal growth and self-discovery.”

His other books include The Journey of Self DiscoveryDare to Dream BigYou Were Born a Genius, How to Become Great in the Kingdom of God, How Far Can I Go?, Move in Silence and Dear Daughter. Mahlangu encourages readers to reflect on their purpose, embrace growth and believe in their potential.
